Autotrader: 9 vehicles in the running for a coveted award
There are the Oscars for movies and Grammy Awards for music. In the world of cars, the best of the best are recognized every year by NACTOY. That’s short for North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year. This group is made up of automotive journalists from the U.S. and Canada who select one winner in each segment from the bevy of new vehicles that debut in a given year.
As with films and music, being honored with this industry award is a major feat. And in the words of so many recipients, just being nominated is an honor in itself.
We now know which nine vehicles have been nominated and are in the running as finalists.
For Car of the Year, the three finalists are:
- Genesis G80 luxury sedan
- Hyundai Elantra compact sedan
- Nissan Sentra compact sedan
For Truck of the Year, the three finalists are:
- Ford F-150 full-size pickup
- Jeep Gladiator Mojave midsize truck
- Ram 1500 TRX high-performance full-size pickup
And for Utility Vehicle of the Year, the three finalists are:
- Ford Mustang Mach-E electric SUV
- Genesis GV80 luxury SUV
- Land Rover Defender SUV
“In this very challenging year, these nine vehicles emerged as our finalists out of an unusually strong field of 27 Semifinalists,” said NACTOY President Gary Witzenburg in a statement. “Each one of them – especially the 15 in the ultracompetitive utility vehicle category – is excellent in nearly every way. Not to mention the automakers’ unusually difficult challenge of getting our 50 jurors from all over North America into their candidate vehicles for testing and evaluation prior to our later-than-usual voting deadline.”
Winners in each category will be announced on January 11, 2021.
