The Wall Street Journal: Arrests made in weekend shootings in Texas and Wisconsin
Police in Texas and Wisconsin said they had arrested suspects in two shootings over the weekend that left a total of six people dead in incidents where the shooters appeared to know the victims.
In Kenosha County, Wis., the sheriff’s department said an individual would be charged with first-degree intentional homicide, with other charges to follow as the investigation continues.
At about 12:42 a.m. Sunday morning, three men died after being shot at a tavern in the village of Somers, Wis., according to the department. Three other men were hospitalized with gunshot wounds.
Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth said that it appeared that one person was removed from the tavern and came back a short time later and began shooting. Two people died at the scene, and one got into a car and subsequently died.
“We don’t believe this was a random act,” Sheriff Beth said. “I currently believe from what I was told that the three people that passed away probably knew each other, and this was a targeted situation.”
“ ‘I’m truly heartbroken that a former Travis County Sheriff’s Office Deputy is the suspect in such a horrific incident. I’m especially grateful to the vigilant citizen who called 911 after seeing Broderick.’ ”
In Austin, Texas, police arrested Stephen Broderick, 41 years old, following another Sunday morning shooting in which two women and one man were killed, according to the Travis County Sheriff’s Department.
Broderick, who is a former deputy in the department, was taken into custody at about 7 a.m. Monday, following a manhunt overnight, after a resident called 911 and said they had seen him.
