Buy This, Not That: Ditching your mask? 4 of the best products for whitening your teeth, according to reviewers

As more Americans get vaccinated, and mask restrictions ease, many people have a new goal: whiter teeth. Indeed, when Walmart reported its earnings in May, it said it had seen a significant uptick in sales of teeth-whitening products in parts of the U.S. where mask restrictions had been lifted. Dentists and experts we talked to said the same: New York-based cosmetic dentist Dr. Lana Rozenberg says that more people “are asking for teeth whitening and for veneers since they are starting to take off the masks more and more,” and Josh Chapman, the global chief brand officer of SmileDirectClub, notes “a large increase in consumers looking to enhance their smiles before re-entering ‘normal life’ and socializing again.” With that in mind, MarketWatch asked dentists, and dug deep into trusted reviews, to find the best at-home teeth whitening kits.
AuraGlow Teeth Whitening Kit, $59.99 on AuraGlow (free shipping included)
Rozenberg calls out AuraGlow as one of her favorite at-home whitening systems; Allure put it on its list of best whitening treatments; and CNET named it the best budget teeth-whitening option. This kit includes an accelerator LED light with 5 bulbs and a built-in timer to speed up whitening; two whitening gel syringes for more than 20 whitening treatments (you can buy refills separately) and a mouth tray with tray case. It uses a 35% carbamide peroxide solution for whitening, and you use it once a day for 30 minutes for whiter teeth.

GLO Science Brilliant 7-Day Teeth Whitening Kit, $44 from Glo Science (free shipping included)
GQ named GLO the best teeth-whitening gel, and reviewers give it lots of love too: It gets 4.5 out of 5 stars with hundreds of reviews on Amazon. Rather than runny gels or sticky strips, you brush on the no-drip hydrogen peroxide whitening gel with a special brush (this is great because you can reach teeth that would be harder to get with a strip), and leave it on. The gel sinks into your teeth and there’s no need to rinse after.

Crest 3D Whitestrips, $47.99 on Amazon
Perhaps the best-known name in the whitening business, Crest 3D Whitestrips — which GQ says are the best whitening strips on the market — are effective and easy to use (put the strips on your teeth once a day for 30 minutes). These strips have earned 4.6 out of 5 stars on Amazon with an impressive 44,000 reviews. “Their 3D Whitestrips are one of the gentler, more affordable routes in the DIY-whitening game,” writes GQ.

Colgate Optic White Teeth 10-Day LED Whitening, $130 on Amazon (this kit is so popular it was sold out this week, but you can add yourself to the list to get it when it’s back in stock)
This isn’t the cheapest option, but it is very effective: Both GQ and CNET say it is the single best at-home teeth whitener, and Rozenberg calls it out as one of her favorites too. The kit includes an LED rechargeable whitening tray (the blue light helps activate the whitening agents), charging case and 30 teeth whitening gel vials (containing 9% hydrogen peroxide). It’s speedy too: You use it for 10 minutes a day for 10 days and you will have whiter teeth. This kit is so popular it was sold out on Amazon on Friday when we last checked, but you can put yourself on the list to get notified when it’s back in stock. You won’t be charged until the item ships.” Add yourself to the list on Amazon now.
