Capitol Report: Betting markets see DeSantis as 2024 Republican presidential nominee, while Trump’s company faces charges
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has the edge over Donald Trump to score the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, according to the latest odds in the betting market PredictIt.
DeSantis has a 28% chance, ahead of Trump’s 25% and 8% for Nikki Haley, the former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, as well as other Republican politicians who are at 6% or lower.
Trump had the edge over DeSantis in most of May and June, according to PredictIt’s data. But his prospects have dropped this week as his company and its longtime finance chief looked on track to get hit with charges involving alleged tax violations related to benefits the Trump Organization gave to top executives.
The company and CFO Allen Weisselberg have been indicted, with Weisselberg surrendering to authorities, and an arraignment was expected on Thursday afternoon at a New York state court in Manhattan.

Trump is emboldened by the charges, said a Politico report on Thursday citing an unnamed adviser to the former president. “Now he’s definitely going to run for president” again, the adviser said, according to the report.
Meanwhile, DeSantis met Thursday with President Joe Biden as they took part in a briefing about the Florida condo collapse. The governor thanked Biden, saying: “You recognized the severity of this tragedy from Day One, and you’ve been very supportive.”
To be sure, betting markets aren’t always right, with PredictIt users, for example, getting a Supreme Court nomination wrong a few years ago.
